Scope

Scope is an AI-integrated platform that helps individuals repurpose their own household waste that would otherwise be discarded by identifying the types of waste and providing repurposing solutions.

Context & Relevance

Landfills take in more than half of the world’s waste worldwide. One of the biggest threats they pose is the production of green house gases, intensifying and speeding up the climate crisis.

While recycling is valuable to a certain degree, this process still required immense amounts of external resources such as energy and chemicals as opposed to repurposing waste that extends the life without the use of additional resource.

The need for ‘Scope’ is incredibly relevant to empower individuals to make changes within their homes. The lack of platforms solely dedicated to repurposing calls for such a platform that helps with repurposing considering the long-term positive effects over those of recycling.

User Research, Personas & Journey

To identify and understand the most effective way of connecting with the audience, user surveys were conducted.

There were 2 surveys conducted: a) to understand their current habits and b) understand how certain situations will prompt them to make changes and implement new habits.

Main Insights — What will encourage them to take sustainable action?
Quick functional suggestions that are tailored to their needs and time.

1. Simple suggestions in accordance to their respective interests.
2. Feeling a sense of collective effort throughout the experience.
3. Visual tracking of personal impact to keep motivated.

Features & Functionality

There are 4 main feature points in this platform, these features are driven by the main insights derived from the user surveys.

Feature 01

Individuals can scan their waste item to indentify the item and using AI integration, there will be suggestions provided based on the user’s interests, time availabilities etc.

When browsing suggestions, the user can also chat with the integrated AI chat-bot to make alterations to the suggestions within the app, in the case of missing items or other custom changes.

Feature 01: Scan (L) & AI Chatbot (R)

Feature 02
Search for items that could be made by repurposing household waste through keywords or image serach. The app will also browse through library of materials and tailor search results based on the inventory.

This is independent of the “Scan” feature, users can search for DIY guides without scanning items.

Feature 03
Users can post their own “repurposing projects” or items to be put up for “donation” on the community board and interact and connect with eachother.

On the community board, users can also claim items that are put up for donation and get more information about the item itself, pick-up location and more.

Feature 04

Visual tracking of the user’s repurposing habits, projects, materials used and personal impact.
The inspiration for the visual is when one puts materials under a microscope to zoom into the hidden information of the item. Similar to this, ‘Scope’ tries to help individuals look more deeper into their household waste and find the hidden treasures underneath and the ways of repurposing to give new life to it.

Visual Inspiration

Coach Marks Step-by-step guided walkthrough on the visual tracking page to help users better comprehend what the visual translates to allowing for better engagement with personal impact data.

Onboarding

To better understand the requirements and availabilities of the user, prior to using the platform there will be an onboarding segment where users will be asked some personal information such as interests, time availability and location to ensure the repurposing suggestions provided are tailored to their specific parameters.
The data collected here, especially the location, will not be shared externally and will only be used for the purposed of pick-up / drop-off of donation items.
