The process of conceptualizing Biome started with the question, “How can creating a personalized experience for consuming crisis-related information support a more emotional engagement?”.

The objective here was to understand the complexities of both crisis communication and human beings and find a way to create a deeper connection between the two, driving more empathy. To do this, it was crucial to understand that each individual is different from one another and multi-faceted, from our own biases, interests, knowledge and most importantly the way we process emotions.

Through a brief survey to understand how different people perceive the severity of the crisis and how connected they feel to it, I was able to learn that more than half fell in a space where they were aware of the ongoing crisis but still felt distant from the growing urgency and intensity of it. One of the main reasons for this was the lack of personal connection. When asked what would help bridge that gap, most of them highlighted the need for information that was highly relevant to their daily lives, associated with certain interests they have, and how it affects the people and spaces they love.
